 Company History
R.D. Herbert & Sons Company, located on Third Avenue along the banks of the Cumberland River, is the effect of years of transformation 130 to be precise.
The original company was established in 1865 as a brick masonry firm furnishing materials for a thriving and growing Nashville. In fact, nearly every brick on the Vanderbilt Campus was hand-made at the turn of the century by Herbert's ancestors.
For more than a century of operations, the company has specialized in sheet metal fabrication, air condition-ing ductwork fabrication and roofing and waterproofing. Today, the firm continues to successfully operate all three specialty segments. The company services Nashville, the Midstate area and southern Kentucky.

The Company Today
R.D. Herbert & Sons Company installs both new and retrofit, commercial, industrial and home roofing systems.
Quality workmanship and an understanding of the mechanics of good roofing are key to this successful firm. To date, R.D. Herbert & Sons has installed nearly 11,000,000 square feet of Carlisle single-ply membrane and has more than 500 "Perfect 10" installations on record.
The company is a member of NRCA (National Roofing Contractors Association) and CSI (Construction Specification Institute).
Some local roofing installations of prominence include the Nashville City Center. Lite & Casualty Towers, Third National Bank, University School. Ryman Auditorium and the Baptist Hospital.

 R.D. Herbert III, began his career as an MIT Graduate, professional engineer and sixth generation of his family in the business, his goal was to "offer the best product at a reasonable price with special emphasis on service."
The secret of our success is and always will be "quality workmanship" especially in a market filled with "marginal" contractors that hire unqualified roofing companies for a cheap price, said Mr. Herbert.
"More than 70 percent of the roofing that we’re doing is retrofitting or reroofing buildings that are only 2 or 3 years old!" "A lot of new work that’s going up now is not being done properly so they end up having to reroof the buildings."
"Our niche is in doing quality work and immediately following up on any problem there may be," said Mr. Herbert. "I think that will be the future of this company - - - quality workmanship. That’s what we’ve always done and that’s what we’ll always have to do if we’re going to survive," said Mr. Herbert.
And Survive it has! "Thanks to our heritage, one that continues now and will continue as long as we have anything to do with it, we will carry on like our dad and others before us" says the Herbert son, Houston and nephew Crockett.
